What Is a Digital Tachograph?
The tachograph device records the following information:
- The distance traveled by the vehicle
- The speed of the vehicle
- Driving time
- Other periods of work or availability
- Breaks from work and daily rest periods
Pursuant to the Regulation on Tachograph Devices Used in Vehicles Engaged in International Road Transport, published in the Official Gazette dated May 21, 2010 and numbered 27587, as of June 16, 2010 it has become mandatory to use a digital tachograph device and card in the international transport operations of newly registered commercial vehicles (trucks and tractor units weighing more than 3.5 tons, and buses carrying more than 9 passengers). There is no obligation to retrofit vehicles that were registered before this date and are fitted with an analog tachograph.
Pursuant to the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) "European Agreement Concerning the Work of Crews of Vehicles Engaged in International Road Transport (AETR)", to which Türkiye is also a party, a transition period until June 16, 2010 was granted for the switch to digital tachograph use in international road transport to countries that are not members of the European Union but are parties to the AETR, including Türkiye. However, since it was not possible in most countries to implement the Digital Tachograph system as a whole by June 16, 2010, this transition period was extended until December 31, 2010. After December 31, 2010, it is mandatory to hold a digital tachograph card, and vehicles will not be able to carry out transport without a digital tachograph card.
